Learn about the wonders of the GWB from a man who scaled its massive towers and lived to write a book about it. Michael Aaron Rockland, professor of American studies, gives a rollicking talk about “the George”the busiest bridge in the world will answer questions and sign copies of his book The George Washington Bridge: Poetry in Steel in Loree Building, Room 115

11 a.m., 1:00 p.m., 3:00 p.m., Baseball Reborn

Baseball was born in Hoboken. Today, minor-league and independent-league teams fill stadiums from Trenton to Montclair. Trace the resurgence of baseball in New Jersey with Bob Golon author of No Minor Accomplishment: The Revival of New Jersey Professional Baseball in Loree Building, Room 115. Bob will be on hand to answer questions and sign copies of his book.

Have your copy of Rutgers Football: A Gridiron Tradition in Scarlet or any of your other Scarlet Knight memorabilia including the Rutgers Vault signed by these players and author Michael J. Pellowski, defensive captain of the Scarlet Knights 1970 team. Pellowski still holds the record for the most sacks in a single game (4, at Lafayette, September 10, 1969).

Watch Kevin Mattson, author of REBELS ALL!: A Short History of the Conservative Mind is Postwar America, on C-SPAN's Book TV on February 14 at 11:30am, 11:00pm, or on February 16 at 6:00am.

Kevin Mattson contends that the right co-opted the radicalism of the 1960's in fusing a new brand of conservatism. Mr. Mattson is critical of conservatives, who he argues have cast themselves as perpetual underdogs and populists, which are two labels that he deems contradictory to the truth. This event was hosted by the Harvard Coop in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Crossing Waters Event Celebrates Kavitha Rajagopalan’s Muslims of Metropolis on Tuesday 12/9 at the Cell Theatre     

Crossing Waters, a multimedia narrative of women who transcend boundaries for love, told in image and story, dance and song, intertwines narratives from Kavitha Rajagopalan’s Muslims of Metropolis with projections and soundscapes curated by Matthew Young. 

Exploring the diasporic experience through a variety of artistic interactions, Crossing Waters transports the audience through the experience of diaspora.

Millennial Makeover

In the HUFFINGTON POST, Alan Rosenblatt reports on a presentation given by Morley Winograd and Mike Hais about their book, Millennial Makeover, in Washington DC:

Building on a rich body of research about political realignment in America, Hais and Winograd explained that a key driving force in realigning the political landscape is the arrival of new communications technology, and the coming of age of a new generation that embraces the technology and demands its incorporation into the political process. The rise of radio in the 1930's and television in the 1960's both reshaped politics in this country. And today, the rise of online social media is doing it once again.

Hollywood on the Hudson

To celebrate the publication of Richard Koszarski's Hollywood on the Hudson, the MUSEUM OF MODERN ART is hosting a film series of the same name for the next month. It started last night. Here's the NEW YORKER listing from last week:

Despite California’s superior light and climate, New York remained a center of movie production during the big-studio era. In conjunction with the publication of Richard Koszarski’s “Hollywood on the Hudson,” MOMA offers films made in New York between 1920 and 1939, including D. W. Griffith’s “Way Down East,” starring Lillian Gish, and “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde,” from 1920, with John Barrymore.

Before the rise of filmmaking in Hollywood, New York and New Jersey together formed a major center of production — and did again in the late 1920s, when the studios returned to New York to tap Broadway talent for the early talkies. This absorbing series, based on the book “Hollywood on the Hudson” by Richard Koszarski, contains rarely screened examples of films from both periods.

Kevin Mattson, author of Rebels All!, talked about the GOP, Sarah Palin, and the culture wars at MCNALLY JACKSON last night in New York City. He's speaking tonight at the HARVARD COOP in Cambridge.

Painting Softly

Michael Quick was in Williamstown this past weekend, speaking at The Clark's Like Breath on Glass: Whistler, Inness, and the Art of Painting Softly, which is open until October 19. This painting, by George Inness, Summer, Montclair (New Jersey Landscape), from Frank Martucci's collection, is on display at the show:

 

Wonder Bar in Asbury Park

The release party for Local Heroes was hosted by the Wonder Bar on July 30, the same week that Bruce Springsteen was playing the Meadowlands. Anders Mårtensson and Jörgen Johansson were in Asbury Park to sign books and enjoy the music as Lance Larson, Vini Lopez, and Sonny Kenn, who are featured in the book, performed.
